WHAT IS HAUTE DOGS?

THE HAUTE DOG organization (pro-nounced "HOT") is a diverse and growing network of dog owners, lovers, educators, rescuers and supporters. Our common bond has resulted in a unique and lively community of folks who share some qualities of our favorite dogs: devotion, spirit and tenacity.

EDUCATE & INFLUENCE
Through educational outreach and events, we hope to help inspire a better understanding and appreciation of dogs, dispel damaging myths, encourage responsible ownership practices, and offer practical adoption and rescue opportunities.

More than 400 Hairy-Legged Beauties Competed

Bentley, Olde English Bulldog Pageant Winner 2009 THE BULLDOG BEAUTY CONTEST was the main event at this year's Haute Dog Pageants produced by beauty pageant and bulldog enthusiast Justin Rudd. In addition to the Bulldog and French Bulldog contests, Rudd included pageants for Pugs and Senior Dogs (all breeds/mixes, ages 10+) this year for the first time. Contestants ranging in age from four months to 17 years traveled to Long Beach, Calif., from as far as northern California, Las Vegas, and Arizona, to compete for the coveted 2009 titles.

Bailey, Senior Dog Pageant winner 2009 The quadrapeds paraded down a grassy runway that included a 100-ft. red carpet runway, flanked by hundreds of gawkers and a panel of real-life beauty queen judges. Judging was based on charm, first impression, face, figure and personality.

Buster, French bulldog winner 2009 The Haute Dog Pageants are a fundraiser for Rudd's nonprofit 501c3 Community Action Team (C.A.T.) of which "Haute Dogs" and "Operation Santa Paws" are a part. Each dog in the contest donates a fee and several thousand dollars was raised from entry fees, front-row seating rentals along the runway and vendors space rentals. The day also featured a pet adoption fair for dogs and cats looking for forever homes.

Approx. 350 front-row seats are available for just $5/pageant. Come to the canopy closest to the red carpet to reserve your seats. NOTE: Seats did sell out last year for the English Bulldog contest. There are plenty of seats for the Pug, French Bulldog and Senior Dog pageants. When you arrive, volunteers at the "seating area tent" will show you to your seat. Proceeds benefit Haute Dogs.

senior dog pageant long beach EACH YEAR ON VALENTINE'S WEEKEND in Long Beach, Calif., dogs and their lovers gather to celebrate faces that some say only a mother could love. English bulldogs are the featured breed on Sun., Feb. 15 at this event that organizer Justin Rudd says is the largest gathering of bulldogs in the world. In addition to the 1:30 p.m. Bulldog Beauty Contest, other events earlier in the day will feature French bulldogs, Pugs and senior dogs of all breeds/mixes; and a pet adoption fair and vendor fair will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Last year, more than 300 English bulldogs and 100 French bulldogs from at least four states and Canada left the crowd drooling for more. Again this year, each quadruped will strut down a 100-ft. red carpet outdoor runway flanked by hundreds of seats, rentable for $5, for gawkers that will snake around the grassy park. This is a competition where gender is no limitation and good looks are no advantage.

Costumes are optional, and not recommended.
Organizers realize that most dogs are so adorable that they shouldn't be covered up! We don't recommend outfits, since these dogs can overheat easily.

Pug Pageant, Long Beach JUDGING
Real-life, reigning beauty queen judges will evaluate this fifth annual contest. As with traditional beauty contests, the dogs in this pageant will be adjudicated on personality, charm, face, figure, and first impression.

THEY ARE COMING FROM AFAR!
Again this year, some dogs will travel a far distance to compete in Long Beach. So far, dogs are coming from as far as Glendale, Arizona (371 miles); Sandy Valley, Nevada (270 miles); and from Dublin, Calif. (375 miles) near San Francisco.

blue ribbon PRIZES AND CATEGORIES
In addition to a year of notoriety and fame and a bejeweled crown, the "most beautfiul" dogs in each of the four pageants (English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs and Senior Dogs) will also receive gift certificates for dog food from LaunderPet & Natural Balance and a HUGE glass jar of dog treats courtesy of Haute Dogs.

More prizes for the day include gift certificates to Wags to Whiskers Pet Grooming (Long Beach) and Camp Bow Wow (Anaheim), copies of the book "Sweet Pea the Bumble Bee", subscriptions to Fido Friendly magazine, collars from Daisy Couture, and more.

A top-10 will be announced in each of the breed categories and awards will be presented for the following: oldest contestant; congeniality; best smile; furthest distance traveled; and best legs. Judges will evaluate every dog as they pass by on each of the categories above.

2008 ROYALTY
The titleholders from last year will take their farewell walks and will be given the opportunity to "speak" to the crowd that typically grows to more than 1,000 spectators. Last year's elite included 5-month-old "Gus" (Little Mr. Hermosa Beach), who took home the French bulldog crown and 1 1/2-year-old "Buddha" (Mr. Valencia) who was named most beautiful English bulldog.

DOG VALET
So that your dog does not have to park/walk a few blocks to the event site: When you arrive to the grassy park (be sure to enter the free parking lot from Nieto Ave.) for the event, feel free to drop your bulldog or pug and an adult chaperone at our dog valet area. We will have an attendant(s) there to help with your loading and unloading. We are not able to watch over your dog(s) while you park. This area is for immediate loading/unloading.

Local Statistical Snapshot

Far surpassing even its national surge in popularity, the Bulldog skyrocketed to 2nd place on the L.A. list. The breed has made the Los Angeles Top 10 for three consecutive years and now ranks the Bulldog highest of any city in the nation.

A close relative to the Bulldog, the French Bulldog made its first recent appearance on the L.A. list in 8th place. San Francisco and Los Angeles were the only cities in the nation to include the French Bulldog in their Top 10 lists. This adorable and affectionate breed is on the rise nationwide with a 404% increase in popularity over the past decade.
